Muscovy Ducks
In past years we have raised Muscovy Ducks
We are amazed at the some of the colouration and iridescence of the feathers in some of the birds.
Our Muscovy's were raised from "day old's" on the homestead. They were kept within a large fenced pasture and at times free range. The ducks are very hardy and resistant to disease, can fly and would follow us around the property.

They were voracious eaters of flies and other bugs, we could always look out and see them chasing after something. We found them very friendly, tame birds and a great addition to the homestead, though they did do some damage if left on the lawn too long, and their droppings can leave a mess.
Muscovy ducks are a terrestrial duck originating from South America. Unlike other ducks this breed will roost in trees, and originally was a black colour. They are also the only duck not derived from Mallard stock. Today almost any colour is available. Males can reach up to 15 pounds and females around 9 pounds. They have large sharp claws for roosting as well as warty skin around their beak and eyes called caruncles.
