Homestead Calender
The following is a calender of the types of things that roughly happen during a regular year here on the homestead
January
- Plan for the upcoming season ( get price lists for seeds, and livestock, touch base with breeders)
- Accounting and organize paperwork from previous year
- Fix and maintain tools
- Read and Research new items we may add to homestead
- Begin Firewood Processing
- Plan structures that may need to be built
- Rethink anything that didn't seem to work the previous year
- Any interior home renovations that need to be done
- Make sure laying hens are comfortable
- Snow removal if required
February
- Firewood processing & Stacking
- Clean and organize tools and storage areas
- Read and Research
- Snow removal if required
March
- Ordering of animals and seeds
- Build structures if required
- Burn brush piles
- Thorough clean of chicken coops
- Finish repairs to anything that may need it, now that weather permits
April
- Finish and place any built structures
- Make sure prepared for all livestock to arrive
- Fencing repairs and modifications
- Service tractor and implements
- Property clean up
- Plant trees & Shrubs
May
- Pickup livestock and get settled into new homes
- Planting of garden
- Grass cutting and property maintenance begins
- Plant perennials and other flowers
- Daily livestock care
June
- Tend to garden - Hoeing and watering plants
- Grass cutting and property maintenance
- Tend to livestock
- Painting
July
- Tend to Garden
- Pick and market produce as comes available
- Grass cutting and property maintenance
- Tend to livestock
- Begin Freezing produce
August
- Tend to Garden
- Pick and market produce
- Prep & Freeze produce
- Canning Begins
- Grass Cutting and property maintenance
September
- Tend to Garden
- Tend to Livestock
- Grass Cutting and property maintenance
- Chckens delivered to abbatior and marketed
- Get ready and attend Highgate Fair
- New hens situated in laying coop
October
- Clean up Garden & Leaves
- Turkeys delivered to abatoir and marketed
November
- Hogs delivered to abatoir and marketed
- Cleanup of tools and storage of items over winter

December
- Clean wood stove & fire up
- Make sure all closed up for winter
- Break for Christmas
