Pastured Meat Goats
2010 was our first and only year, raising meat goats. We purchased weaned kids from a local breeder, a Boer X Kiko. We decided to get goats as we hope they will clear some brush for us and provide some livestock experience, then sell them off as larger animals. Goat Meat is also called "chevon" and is apparently a very lean alternative to beef, worldwide it is also the most consumed of the red meats.
Chevon (Goat Meat)
Goat meat is the most widely consumed meat in the world and the meat of choice by many cultures for centuries. There are very few, if any religious taboos connected to eating goat. Chicken & fish have a reputation as a leaner and healthier alternative to beef & pork, where goat meat is even leaner (very low in saturated fat), has less fat waste and is higher in iron and lower in cholesterol. Goat meat is sometimes referred to as "chevon" or "capretto". Chevon is a slightly heavier and older goat ( 6-18) months, and has a mild gamey flavour and a firmer muscle texture than capretto. Capretto refers to a young goat, with a live weight of 20-30 lbs, or 4-6 months old. It is very lean and pinkish in colour. Capretto/Chevon are available in cuts similar to those of lamb (roasts, chops, stew meat etc.)
